What Scale Changes

Scale matters, but scale does not replace mechanism.

Larger models can store and combine more patterns. More data can expose more language, code, facts, and formats. More compute can train larger systems. These changes can produce new behavior, but they do not remove the need to understand objective, data, architecture, and evaluation.

A useful stance is:

scale changes capability, but mechanism still matters

Exercise

Does increasing scale remove the need to understand data and evaluation? Answer 1 for yes or 0 for no.

Compute it first, then check your number.
